Reading a Viking fault correctly is half the repair — the symptom you see is rarely the part that failed. This page is the diagnostic side of our Viking work: what actually breaks on Viking refrigeration and cooking equipment, how a technician isolates the cause, and where the money goes once the fault is confirmed. We have repaired Viking appliances across the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005, and we keep the scope here to the three categories homeowners ask about most — built-in and freestanding refrigeration, Professional gas and dual-fuel ranges, and wall ovens with their matching cooktops.

Viking built commercial-style hardware for the home, which is good news: the heavy-gauge bodies outlast their electronics and burner parts, so most failures are a single replaceable component rather than a write-off. A range that will not light is usually a spark electrode, igniter, or safety valve — not the whole burner. A refrigerator running warm is more often a defrost or fan fault than a dead compressor. An oven drifting off temperature is typically a worn igniter or sensor, easily proven with a meter.

If your unit is showing a code, start with our Viking error-code guide; if you want numbers, the Bay Area cost breakdown and our San Jose and San Francisco pricing pages put real ranges next to each fault.

Viking lineups we service

Product families & series

Professional Series Ranges

Gas and dual-fuel Pro ranges with high-output burners, including the 30 through 60-inch models and the VGIC, VGSC and VDSC families.

Gas & Dual-Fuel Cooktops

Open-burner and sealed-burner gas cooktops plus induction and electric rangetops, where spark, valve and simmer faults concentrate.

Single & Double Wall Ovens

Electric and gas wall ovens with convection, where igniters, bake elements, temperature sensors and door-lock motors do most of the failing.

Built-In & Professional Refrigeration

Built-in columns, freestanding refrigerators, French-door and side-by-side models, and bottom-freezer units — cooling, defrost and control faults.

Common faults

Viking problems we fix

Burner will not light or clicks without flame

We test the spark electrode, igniter module and safety valve in sequence, and check the orifice for grease before condemning any part — most no-light calls are a $20 electrode, not a burner assembly.

Oven slow to heat or off temperature

A bake igniter that glows but draws too little current, a tired sensor, or a failed element each read differently on a meter. We confirm with a temperature probe before calibrating to the set point.

Refrigerator running warm or freezing food

Warm-but-running points to defrost heaters, the evaporator fan or a stuck damper far more often than the sealed system. We isolate the circuit and restore proper temperature without guesswork.

Door-lock or self-clean lockout

Latch motors and thermal fuses fail after high-heat self-clean cycles and leave the oven stuck locked. We diagnose the lock circuit and replace the protective components correctly.

Weak flame, uneven heat or noisy fridge

Gas pressure and orifice issues sap burner output; a humming or rattling refrigerator usually points to a fan or compressor mount. We trace the real source rather than swapping parts on a hunch.

“The griddle burner on our Viking Professional range in Hillsborough wasn't getting hot enough. Steve cleaned a partly blocked orifice and replaced a worn thermocouple, and it's back to full heat. He was respectful of the house, wore shoe covers, and left no mess behind.”

Felix O.Hillsborough · Viking · range

“Our Viking refrigerator column in San Jose was running warm and the food was barely cold. Tom diagnosed a failing evaporator fan motor plus a frosted-over coil, swapped the fan and ran a defrost cycle, and it's been holding 37 degrees since. Honest about the cost up front and no upsell.”

Marco D.San Jose · Viking · refrigerator column

“Our Viking double wall oven in Campbell had the lower oven not heating at all. Dave diagnosed a broken bake element and a tripped thermal fuse, replaced both, and tested each oven through a full cycle. He was thorough and explained why the fuse had blown so it won't happen again.”

Soo-jin L.Campbell · Viking · wall oven

“The freezer side of our Viking column in San Francisco was fine but the fresh-food side stayed warm. Mike found a stuck damper that wasn't letting cold air through and replaced the control, then verified temps in both compartments before leaving. Careful around our tight cabinetry and very tidy.”

Devin P.San Francisco · Viking · refrigerator column

“Our Viking freezer in Walnut Creek was frosting over heavily and the food was getting freezer burn. Tom found a failed defrost heater and timer, replaced both, and cleared the drain line that had iced up. Clean work, fair pricing, and he answered all my questions without rushing.”

Mira C.Walnut Creek · Viking · freezer

“The Viking wall oven in our San Carlos kitchen was overshooting temperature and burning everything. Dave traced it to a bad oven temperature sensor and replaced it; he had to come back a second time once the part arrived, but he kept me posted the whole way. Baking is accurate again.”
