How to Replace the Water Filter in a Sub-Zero Refrigerator
Step-by-step Sub-Zero water filter replacement: how to find the filter, swap it, flush it, and reset the indicator. Do it yourself in a few minutes.
To replace a Sub-Zero water filter, locate the filter (usually in the upper-right area of the fresh-food compartment or behind the grille on some models), turn the old cartridge counterclockwise to release it, insert the new one and turn clockwise until it seats, then flush about 1 to 2 gallons of water through the dispenser and reset the filter indicator on the control panel. The whole job takes only a few minutes and needs no tools.
Sub-Zero recommends replacing the water filter about every 6 months, or sooner if water flow slows or the change-filter indicator appears. Fresh filters keep dispensed water and ice clean and protect the system from sediment.
Find Your Filter and the Right Cartridge
On most Sub-Zero built-in refrigerators with a dispenser, the water filter is inside the fresh-food compartment, typically in the upper-right corner. Some models locate it behind the lower front grille. If you are not sure, check your owner's manual for the model.
Use the correct Sub-Zero replacement cartridge for your model. Using the specified filter ensures a proper seal and the intended filtration performance. Have the new cartridge ready before you remove the old one so the swap is quick.
Make the Swap Clean and Drip-Free
A Sub-Zero filter swap is designed to be quick and largely drip-free, the valve shuts off water flow as you turn the cartridge out, so you usually do not need to shut off a water supply. Still, keep a towel handy to catch the small amount of water that can remain in the housing.
Turn the old cartridge counterclockwise to unlock and pull it straight out. Insert the new cartridge, align it, and turn it clockwise until it seats firmly. Do not overtighten; a firm, hand-snug turn is enough for a good seal.
Flush and Reset After Installing
After installing a new filter, always flush the system. Run about 1 to 2 gallons of water through the dispenser to clear air and any carbon fines from the fresh cartridge. You may notice sputtering or slightly cloudy water at first, this is trapped air and is normal, and it clears with flushing.
Finally, reset the filter-life indicator on the control panel so the unit tracks the new cartridge. On touch-control models this is done through the filter menu; on button models, hold the designated filter or reset control until the indicator clears.
When to Call a Professional
Water filter replacement is an owner-safe task, but related symptoms sometimes are not. Call a technician if water still flows slowly after a new filter and flush, if you see leaks at the housing or water lines, if the dispenser or ice maker stops working, or if the filter indicator will not reset.
These can point to a faulty valve, a kinked or frozen line, or a dispenser fault. As Sub-Zero specialists in the Bay Area, we can resolve water and ice problems beyond a simple filter change. Call (650) 668-1554.
Step by step
- Buy the correct cartridge. Get the Sub-Zero replacement filter specified for your model so it seals and filters correctly.
- Locate the filter. Find the filter, usually in the upper-right of the fresh-food compartment or behind the lower grille on some models.
- Remove the old filter. Turn the old cartridge counterclockwise to release it and pull it straight out. Keep a towel handy for minor drips.
- Install the new filter. Insert the new cartridge, align it, and turn clockwise until it seats firmly. Do not overtighten.
- Flush the system. Run 1 to 2 gallons of water through the dispenser to clear air and carbon fines. Initial sputtering or cloudiness is normal.
- Reset the indicator. Reset the change-filter indicator on the control panel so the unit tracks the new cartridge's life.
FAQ
Questions & answers
How often should I replace my Sub-Zero water filter?
About every 6 months, or sooner if water flow slows or the change-filter indicator appears. Heavy use or poor incoming water quality may call for more frequent changes.
Do I need to shut off the water before changing the filter?
Usually not. Sub-Zero filter housings shut off flow as you remove the cartridge, so the swap is largely drip-free. Keep a towel handy for the small amount of water left in the housing.
Why is my water cloudy after replacing the filter?
Cloudy or sputtering water right after a filter change is trapped air and harmless carbon fines from the new cartridge. Flushing 1 to 2 gallons through the dispenser clears it.
