Why Your Sub-Zero Smells Like Plastic (and How to Fix It)

If your Sub-Zero smells like plastic, the cause is usually one of three things: a normal break-in odor on a new or newly serviced unit, an odor absorbed into the interior plastic and food, or, more seriously, an electrical or overheating smell that needs immediate attention. The key is the type of smell. A faint plastic odor on a new unit is normal; a hot, burning, or melting-plastic smell while the unit runs is not.

If you smell burning plastic, hot electronics, or see any smoke or scorching, stop and disconnect power to the unit at the breaker, then call a professional. For ordinary odor problems, the fixes below are safe to do yourself.

Burning Plastic Smell: Treat It as Electrical

A sharp, hot, burning-plastic smell, especially near the compressor area at the bottom or back of the unit, can indicate an overheating electrical component such as a relay, fan motor, control board, or wiring. This is the one scenario where you should act immediately.

If the smell is hot or burning, or you notice smoke, sparking, or melted or discolored components, switch off the refrigerator's circuit breaker (or unplug it if you can do so safely) and call a technician. Do not keep running the unit hoping the smell clears. Electrical faults can worsen quickly and are not a DIY repair.

New or Newly Serviced Unit: Normal Break-In Odor

A brand-new Sub-Zero, or one that just had a component like a fan motor or control board replaced, can give off a mild plastic or chemical smell for the first days of operation as new materials and motor windings reach normal operating temperature. This break-in odor is generally harmless and fades on its own.

You can speed it up by wiping the interior with a mild baking-soda solution and keeping the unit well ventilated. If the odor is faint, cool rather than hot, and steadily improving over a few days, it is almost certainly normal break-in and not a fault.

Absorbed Odors and Off-Gassing Plastics

Sometimes the smell is not electrical at all but a plastic or chemical odor that the interior liner, gaskets, and food have absorbed, often after storing strongly scented items, takeout containers, or new plastic packaging. Sub-Zero interiors are plastic and can hold odors.

The fix is a thorough cleaning. Remove food, take out shelves and bins, and wash everything with warm water and baking soda or a mild dish soap. Wipe the gaskets and the interior walls, leave an open box of baking soda or activated charcoal inside, and discard any packaging or food that may be the source.

When to Call a Professional

Call for service right away if the smell is hot, burning, or accompanied by smoke, sparking, tripped breakers, or visible scorching, these are electrical warning signs. Also call if a plastic odor persists after a full cleaning and is not the harmless break-in type, or if it returns whenever the compressor or a fan runs.
