Sub-Zero Refrigerator Warm but Running: Why and What to Check
Sub-Zero running but warm? Check coils, vents, door seals, and the evaporator fan. Learn common causes and when sealed-system service is needed.
When a Sub-Zero is running but warm, the usual causes are dirty condenser coils, blocked air vents, a poor door seal, or a failed evaporator fan that has stopped circulating cold air. Clean the coils, clear the vents, and check the gaskets first, these resolve many warm-but-running cases.
If one compartment is warm while the other stays cold, or the fridge is warm despite a constantly running compressor, the cause may be the evaporator fan, a defrost-system fault, or a sealed-system issue requiring a certified technician.
Why a Running Fridge Can Still Be Warm
A compressor that runs does not guarantee cold air is reaching the cabinet. If the condenser coils are clogged, the system cannot reject heat efficiently and the box warms up. If the evaporator fan has failed, cold air is generated but not circulated, so the fresh-food section warms while the area near the evaporator stays cold. A heavy frost layer from a defrost fault can also block airflow.
Airflow and Seal Issues
Overpacked shelves can block the interior vents that move cold air between compartments, leaving sections warm. A door that does not seal, due to a worn or dirty gasket or a misaligned door, lets warm, humid air in faster than the unit can cool it. Confirm both doors close fully, the gaskets are clean and supple, and nothing inside is blocking the vents.
Also make sure the unit has ventilation clearance and is not adjacent to an oven or in direct sunlight, which add heat load.
Component and Sealed-System Causes
If airflow and seals check out but the fridge stays warm, suspect a failed evaporator fan motor, a defrost heater or sensor fault causing frost buildup, or a sealed-system problem such as low refrigerant. One compartment warm and the other cold on a dual-compressor model points to a single-circuit fault.
Sealed-system diagnosis and repair require EPA certification. Fan and defrost repairs need proper parts and testing, so these are professional jobs.
When to Call a Professional
Call for service if the unit stays warm after cleaning coils, clearing vents, and confirming a good seal, or if you see frost buildup, one warm compartment, or a constantly running compressor. Subzero Repair has diagnosed warm-but-running Sub-Zero units across Los Gatos and the Bay Area since 2005, including evaporator fan, defrost, and sealed-system faults. Call (650) 668-1554.
Step by step
- Clean the condenser coils. Remove the front grille and vacuum the coils so the system can reject heat and cool effectively.
- Clear the interior vents. Rearrange food so the vents between compartments are unobstructed and cold air can circulate.
- Check the door seals. Confirm both doors close fully and the gaskets are clean, flexible, and sealing without gaps.
- Reduce heat load. Ensure the unit has ventilation clearance and is away from ovens and direct sunlight.
- Listen for the evaporator fan. Note whether the interior fan is running; if it is silent or one compartment is warm, a component may have failed.
- Call for service. If the unit stays warm after these checks, schedule professional diagnosis for the fan, defrost, or sealed system.
FAQ
Questions & answers
Why is my Sub-Zero running constantly but still warm?
A constantly running compressor that cannot cool often means clogged condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, frost blocking airflow, or a sealed-system issue. Clean the coils first, then have it diagnosed if it persists.
My freezer is fine but the fridge is warm. Why?
This usually means the evaporator fan that circulates cold air to the fresh-food side has failed, a vent is blocked, or frost has built up. On dual-compressor models it can be a single-circuit fault.
Could low refrigerant make my fridge warm?
Yes. A refrigerant leak or low charge can leave the unit warm despite running. This requires an EPA-certified technician to diagnose and repair; it is not a DIY fix.
