Sub-Zero Refrigerator Leaking Water: Causes and Fixes

A Sub-Zero leaking water is most often caused by a clogged or frozen defrost drain, a loose or worn water filter, or a problem with the ice maker or water line. Water pooling inside usually points to the defrost drain; water on the floor usually points to the water filter, water line, or ice maker connections.

Many of these are owner-fixable: reseating the water filter, clearing a blocked drain, and checking line connections. Internal water-valve and sealed-system repairs should be left to a technician.

Where the Water Is Tells You the Cause

Water inside the fresh-food compartment, often under the crisper drawers, typically means the defrost drain is clogged or frozen, so defrost meltwater backs up instead of draining away. Water on the floor in front of or under the unit usually traces to the water filter housing, the supply line, or the ice maker fill tube. Ice or water at the bottom of the freezer can also indicate a drain problem.

Identifying the location first saves time and tells you whether it is a quick fix or needs service.

Owner-Fixable Causes

A water filter that is loose, cross-threaded, or overdue for replacement can drip; reseat it firmly or replace it with the correct cartridge. A clogged defrost drain can sometimes be cleared by flushing warm water through the drain opening at the back of the freezer floor after removing visible ice. Check that the water supply line behind the unit is firmly connected at both ends and not pinched.

Also confirm the unit is level; a fridge tilted forward can let condensation or drain water run out instead of down the drain.

Problems That Need a Technician

A cracked water inlet valve, a failed ice maker assembly, or a defrost system that repeatedly freezes the drain are jobs for a professional. So is any leak you cannot trace, or one that recurs after you have cleared the drain and checked the filter and lines. Water near electrical components should be addressed promptly to prevent damage.

A technician can test the inlet valve, inspect the ice maker, and correct a chronic defrost-drain freeze-up properly.

Step by step

1. Locate the water. Determine whether water is pooling inside the cabinet or on the floor to identify the likely source.
2. Check and reseat the water filter. Make sure the filter is properly seated and not overdue for replacement; install the correct cartridge if needed.
3. Inspect the water supply line. Confirm the line behind the unit is firmly connected at both ends and not pinched or cracked.
4. Clear the defrost drain. Remove visible ice from the drain opening on the freezer floor and flush warm water through to clear a clog.
5. Level the unit. Check that the refrigerator is level, slightly tilted back, so drain water flows correctly.
6. Call for service if it persists. If leaks continue or you find a cracked valve or faulty ice maker, schedule professional repair.
