First, rule out power and settings
Before assuming a failed part, confirm the oven actually has power and is being told to heat. Check the circuit breaker; electric ovens often run on a double-pole 240V breaker, and one half can trip while the clock and lights still work, leaving the oven unable to heat. Reset any tripped breaker fully (off, then on).
Then rule out settings. Make sure a delay-start or timed-bake program is not active, that a child lock or control lock is off, and that the oven is not in Sabbath mode, which disables normal heating behavior. A simple control reset, powering the oven off at the breaker for a minute and back on, clears many glitchy no-heat states. These steps are all owner-safe.
Electric ovens: bake element and broil element
In an electric oven, the bake element (bottom) and broil element (top) are the most common no-heat culprits. A working element glows evenly orange-red. If an element stays dark, has a visible break or blister, or only the broiler heats while baking does not, the element has likely failed. You can visually inspect for obvious damage with the oven off and cool.
Element replacement on some freestanding ranges is straightforward, but on high-end built-in and dual-fuel ovens the elements, terminals, and wiring are often integrated and live-voltage. Gas ovens: the igniter and safety valve
Most gas ovens do not have a pilot light; they use a glow-bar igniter. A weak igniter is the single most common gas no-heat cause: it may glow but no longer get hot enough to open the valve, so you smell faint gas or hear clicking but get no flame.
Igniter and gas-valve work involves the live gas supply and proper current testing, so it is not an owner DIY task. If your gas oven won't heat and you smell gas strongly, shut off the oven, ventilate, and avoid igniting anything. Sensor and control board faults
