Sub-Zero Refrigerator Not Turning On: Troubleshooting Steps

If your Sub-Zero will not turn on, start with the basics: confirm the unit is plugged in, check the home's circuit breaker, test the outlet, and make sure the control panel is not in a powered-off or sabbath/showroom mode. A surprising number of no-power calls are a tripped breaker or an accidentally disabled panel.

If power reaches the unit but it still will not start, the issue may be the control board, the user interface, or internal wiring, which require professional diagnosis. Never attempt internal electrical repairs yourself.

First, Confirm It Is Actually Off

A Sub-Zero with interior lights working but no cooling is a different problem (see cooling articles) than one that is completely dead. Open the door: if lights and the display are off, you likely have a power-supply issue. If the display is on but the unit reads as off, the controls may have been switched to off, showroom/demo mode, or a service mode.

Check Power Supply

Confirm the plug is fully seated in the outlet. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker serving the kitchen and reset it if needed. Test the outlet with another device, or a multimeter if you have one, to confirm it has power. Some installations place the outlet behind the unit or in an adjacent cabinet, so it can be jostled loose.

If the outlet is on a GFCI circuit, press the reset button on the GFCI receptacle, which may be elsewhere in the kitchen or garage.

Check the Control Panel

On the control panel, look for an off setting or a mode indicator. Many Sub-Zero models can be turned off from the panel and have a showroom or demo mode that disables cooling. Consult the indicator lights or display to confirm the unit is set to on and not in a special mode. A control reset (cycling power at the breaker for a couple of minutes) can clear a frozen display.

When to Call a Professional

5. Power-cycle the unit. Turn the breaker off for two minutes, then back on, to clear a frozen control display.
6. Call for service. If the outlet has power and the panel is correct but the unit stays dead, schedule professional diagnosis.
